Borrell: Gas shipment issues in EU due to conflict with Russia

BRUSSELS, Feb 7 (PRIME) -- The difficulties with gas deliveries to Europe are connected to a crisis in relations with Russia, head of the E.U. diplomacy Josep Borrell said on his blog on February 6.

"Energy has always been among the most important geopolitical issues. With high prices and gas supplies challenges caused by the crisis with Russia, it is at the top of our agenda," Borrell said.

“We need to address short-term pressures while sticking to our long-term goal of the net-zero transition. The E.U.-U.S. Energy Council in Washington DC will boost transatlantic cooperation on this front.”

The E.U. will be working on raising the reverse gas shipments to Ukraine in the framework of the existing transport system, and it must urgently discuss the creation of strategic gas reserves.

The gas prices in Europe are to remain high in 2022, which will impact the recovery of the economy after the pandemic, he said.

Borrell said also that Russia became resilient to Economic sanctions over the last few years because of rising foreign currency reserves. At the same time, Russia did more than the E.U. to prevent gas shipment interruptions.
